How to Choose the Right Parasol Base

Getting the weight and fit right makes a real difference. Here is what to think about before buying.

Weight

This is the most important factor. As a general rule, a 2m to 2.5m parasol needs a base of at least 15kg to stay stable in typical UK garden conditions. For a 3m parasol, 20-25kg is a safer starting point. If your garden is open and catches the wind, go heavier. Cantilever or offset parasols, which have no centre pole, put more load on the base and usually need 25kg or more.

Shape

Square bases tend to be more stable on paved or decked areas because they sit flat. Round bases are a good choice if you want to position the parasol away from the edge of a table, as there are no corners to trip over. Both shapes work equally well on grass or gravel, though a flat hard surface gives you the most solid footing.

Material

Resin and polyresin bases are weatherproof and will not rust, which makes them a low-maintenance option. They are also lighter to carry than cast iron, which matters if you move your parasol around between different spots. Powder-coated steel bases are durable and tend to sit lower to the ground, giving a slightly more stable feel underfoot.

Pole Compatibility

Most of our bases fit poles between 38mm and 57mm in diameter using the included adapters and locking bolt. Always check the pole diameter of your parasol before ordering. This information is listed on the parasol product page. If you are replacing a base for a parasol you already own, measure the pole at the bottom before choosing.

Parasol Bases Frequently Asked Questions

  • How heavy should a parasol base be?

For a 2-2.5m parasol, a base of at least 15kg is recommended. For 3m parasols, aim for 20-25kg or more. Cantilever parasols, which have an offset arm rather than a centre pole, typically need a heavier base of 25kg or above due to the extra leverage involved.

  • What pole sizes do your parasol bases fit?

Most of our parasol bases are designed to fit poles between 38mm and 57mm in diameter. Adapters and a locking bolt are usually included to cover the range. The exact compatibility is listed on each product page, so check this before buying if you already have a parasol.

  • Can I use a parasol base on decking?

Yes. Square bases tend to work particularly well on decking as they sit flat and do not rock. Make sure the base is heavy enough for the size of your parasol, as wind can have more of an effect on elevated or exposed decked areas.

  • Do your parasol bases fit cantilever parasols?

Some do, but cantilever parasols often come with their own dedicated base as part of the product. If you are buying a cantilever parasol separately and need a compatible base, check the product listing carefully or contact us, and we can point you in the right direction.

  • Are the parasol bases weatherproof?

Yes, all the bases in our range are designed for outdoor use. Resin and polyresin models will not rust, and steel bases have a powder-coated finish for weather resistance. For best results and to extend their lifespan, store bases under cover or in a shed during winter.

  • Do you offer free delivery on parasol bases?

Yes. All orders come with free delivery to UK mainland addresses. We are unable to deliver to Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, Scottish Offshore islands, or other addresses outside the UK mainland.

  • What is your returns policy?

If your parasol base arrives damaged or is faulty, we will arrange collection and offer a replacement or full refund. If you change your mind after ordering, you are welcome to return the item, but the cost of return shipping will need to be covered by you.

  • How long does delivery take?

We dispatch within 3-5 working days of your order being placed. All orders are sent with a tracked service, and you will receive your tracking information by email once your order is on its way.
