Most garden sheds fall under permitted development rights, so no planning permission needed - but there are a few rules. Sheds can't take up more than 50% of your garden area, they need to be under 2.5m high if within 2m of a boundary, and if you're in a conservation area or have a listed property, different rules might apply. For sheds over 15 square metres, you might need building regulations approval. When in doubt, check with your local council - they'd rather answer a quick question than deal with enforcement later.

A concrete slab is ideal but not always necessary - a level base of paving slabs, treated timber bearers, or even a well-prepared gravel base can work fine for lighter sheds. The key is keeping the shed level, stable, and off direct ground contact to prevent damp and rot. Some larger sheds come with foundation kits to make this easier. We'd always recommend checking the specific requirements for your chosen shed.

Most sheds are designed for DIY assembly, though you'll definitely want a helping hand - it's not really a solo job. Smaller sheds might take a weekend, larger ones could need a few days depending on your DIY confidence. The foundations are usually the trickiest bit, so getting that right first makes everything else much easier.

Most of our sheds come with basic pad-lockable hasps, but for valuable tools or equipment, you might want to upgrade the security. Look for sheds with reinforced door frames, quality hinges, and the option to add additional locks. Window-less sheds are naturally more secure, and some models have reinforced panels. Remember, a shed on a visible, well-lit part of your garden is naturally more secure than one hidden away. For expensive tools, consider adding an alarm or storing the most valuable items elsewhere overnight.
