Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about Raised Beds
What materials are available for raised garden beds?
Our raised bed collection features several durable materials to suit different garden styles and budgets. Galvanised steel beds offer excellent weather resistance and a modern look, whilst our Corten steel options develop a beautiful rust-like patina over time. For a more traditional appearance, choose from our solid wood beds crafted from acacia or pine, or opt for wicker designs that add natural charm to any garden space. We also stock polypropylene (PP) beds which provide a lightweight, affordable solution.
How deep should a raised garden bed be?
Most of our raised beds range from 26cm to 82cm in height, which covers the recommended depths for different types of plants. Shallow beds (26-36cm) work well for herbs, lettuce, and other leafy greens with shorter root systems. Medium depth beds (40-50cm) are perfect for most vegetables including tomatoes, peppers, and root vegetables like carrots. Deeper beds (69-82cm) are ideal if you have mobility concerns or want to grow larger plants without bending down, and they also provide excellent drainage for root vegetables.
What sizes of raised beds do you offer?
Our collection includes a wide variety of sizes to fit any garden space. Compact options start from around 77cm x 39cm, perfect for small patios or herb gardens. Medium beds range from 100cm x 100cm square designs to rectangular beds measuring 482cm x 50cm. For larger gardens, we stock extended beds up to 1152cm in length. Many of our beds also come in sets of 2 or 3, giving you flexibility to create your ideal garden layout.
Do I need to assemble the raised beds myself?
Most of our raised garden beds arrive flat-packed and require some assembly, though this is typically straightforward with basic tools. Galvanised and Corten steel beds usually feature simple panel systems that slot or bolt together. Wooden beds may require screwing together pre-cut panels, and many include clear instructions. Some of our beds come with reinforced rods or safety edging already included. The assembly process generally takes 1-2 hours depending on the size and complexity of the design.
Can raised beds be used for both vegetables and flowers?
Our raised beds are versatile and suitable for growing both edible plants and ornamental flowers. Vegetable gardening benefits from the improved drainage and soil control that raised beds provide, making them perfect for tomatoes, herbs, salads, and root vegetables. Flower displays also thrive in raised beds, and many of our designs complement both formal and cottage garden styles. Some beds even feature trellis attachments that support climbing plants like beans, peas, or flowering vines.
What's included with the raised garden beds?
Each raised bed comes with different features depending on the model you choose. Basic beds include the frame panels and assembly hardware. Enhanced options may feature protective PE or nylon linings to prevent soil leakage, greenhouse covers for season extension, or bed liners for easy maintenance. Some models include reinforced corners, safety edging to prevent cuts, or mobility features like wheels. Check individual product descriptions to see exactly what's included with your chosen bed.
Are these raised beds suitable for year-round outdoor use?
Our raised beds are designed to withstand the UK weather conditions throughout the year. Galvanised and Corten steel beds offer exceptional durability and won't rot or degrade. Wooden beds are treated for outdoor use, though they may benefit from occasional treatment to extend their lifespan. Wicker and polypropylene beds are UV-resistant and weather-proof. Many of our beds can be enhanced with optional greenhouse covers for winter protection or season extension, helping you grow fresh produce even in colder months.
How much soil will I need to fill my raised bed?
The amount of soil depends on your bed's dimensions. For reference, a 100cm x 100cm x 40cm bed requires approximately 400 litres of soil mix. Rectangular beds like our 482cm x 50cm x 36cm models need around 867 litres. We recommend using a quality raised bed soil mix consisting of approximately one-third compost, one-third topsoil, and one-third well-aged manure or other organic matter. This creates the ideal growing environment with excellent drainage whilst retaining moisture and nutrients for healthy plant growth.
