Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about Chest of Drawers
How many drawers do I actually need in a chest of drawers?
It really depends on what you're storing and how much space you've got. For a single person or child's room, a 3-4 drawer unit usually covers the basics - underwear, socks, t-shirts, and maybe some pyjamas. Couples or families typically need 5-6 drawers minimum, and if you're trying to store bedding, towels, or bulky jumpers as well, you'll probably want 6-8 drawers. Remember, it's often better to have more smaller drawers than fewer massive ones - easier to keep organised.
What's the difference between fabric and wooden drawer units?
Fabric drawer units are lighter, cheaper, and gentler on your clothes - perfect if you've got delicate fabrics or you're on a budget. The fabric drawers usually pull right out for cleaning, which is handy. Wooden units are more robust and look more traditional, but they're heavier and cost more. If you've got kids who slam drawers or you want something that'll last twenty years, wood's probably worth the extra cost. Fabric's fine if you treat it reasonably well.
Do chest of drawers come ready assembled or flat-packed?
Most of our chest of drawers arrive flat-packed to keep delivery costs reasonable and make them easier to get upstairs. Assembly usually takes a few hours with basic tools - the instructions are normally pretty clear these days. If you're hopeless with DIY, most areas have handymen who'll put furniture together for a reasonable fee. A few of the smaller fabric units come mostly assembled, but the wooden ones definitely need building.
Will a chest of drawers fit up narrow stairs or through small doorways?
Flat-packed units shouldn't be a problem since you're carrying the pieces up separately. Once assembled, most chest of drawers are too wide to go through doorways sideways, so measure your doorways and hallways first. Standard UK doorways are usually 762mm (30 inches) wide, and most chest of drawers are designed to fit through, but always check the dimensions. Taller units might need tilting to get around corners.
Are mobile chest of drawers on wheels sturdy enough for daily use?
The wheeled units we stock are surprisingly robust - they need to be since they're designed to move around regularly. Look for models with locking castors so they don't roll away when you're trying to open drawers. The wheels are usually designed not to scratch floors, but if you've got expensive hardwood, it's worth checking. They're brilliant for rental properties or if you like rearranging your bedroom seasonally.
How deep are the drawers and will they fit my clothes properly?
Drawer depth varies quite a bit between models. Most standard chest of drawers have drawers around 35-40cm deep, which handles folded t-shirts, underwear, and most clothing fine. If you're planning to store bulky jumpers or bedding, check the internal dimensions first. The deeper bottom drawers are usually best for larger items, whilst the smaller top drawers work well for accessories and smaller bits.
Do I need to fix chest of drawers to the wall for safety?
For taller units (anything over about 1.2m high), wall fixing is definitely recommended, especially if you've got children around. Even adults can accidentally tip a chest over if they pull multiple drawers out at once or climb on it. Most units come with wall fixing brackets and screws, though you might need different fixings depending on your wall type. It's a simple job that could prevent a nasty accident.
What brands do you stock and how do they compare for quality?
We mainly stock HOMCOM units, which offer good value for money with decent build quality - they're particularly good for the fabric drawer models and modern styles. Our unbranded options are budget-friendly and fine for basic storage needs or temporary solutions. Vinsetto tends to specialise in office-style storage with wheels. All brands come with assembly instructions and are designed for home use, so your choice often comes down to budget and the specific style you're after.
